Brandy

Brandy is a spirit distilled from fermented fruit, most commonly grapes. It encompasses a wide family including cognac (France), armagnac (France), pisco (Peru/Chile), grappa (Italy), and fruit brandies like calvados (apple). Brandy is the broad category. Cognac is brandy from the Cognac region of France, double-distilled and oak-aged. Armagnac is from Gascony, typically single-distilled and often earthier and more rustic. Both are grape-based and barrel-aged, but the production differences create distinct flavor profiles.

Brandy isn’t technically sweet — the sugars from the fruit are fermented into alcohol. However, barrel aging adds notes of vanilla, caramel, and dried fruit that can taste sweet on the palate. Some producers add a small amount of sugar (dosage), but quality brandy derives its perceived sweetness from aging.
