Named for the Armenian word for chess, Shakmat honors two of the country's great traditions — the game and the konyak. This XO brandy is distilled from four indigenous Armenian grapes (Kangun, Kakhet, Garan Dmak, and Rkatsiteli) and rested 23 years in barrels hewn from local Caucasian oak grown high in the Caucasus mountains. Expect dried plum and raisin, walnut, clove, tobacco, molasses, vanilla, and a whisper of black pepper. Pour it neat after dinner, alongside dark chocolate or a slow game of chess.
