Here's a Japanese whisky with a good backstory: importer Aiko tracked down surplus barrels at a distillery in Yamanashi Prefecture, near Mt. Fuji, and bottled them as Yamato. This Gold Samurai Edition blends malt and grain whisky aged three to eight years in rare Mizunara oak — the prized Japanese wood that lends its signature spice. Expect honey and oak on the nose, then vanilla, toffee and dried fruit before a soft, faintly smoky finish. Pour it neat, over ice, or into a highball.
