Overview

Xicaru means "beautiful" in Zapotec, and this joven mezcal earns the name honestly. Master Mezcalero Fernando Santibanez makes it in small batches at a Matatlan palenque, using his grandmother's recipe and 100% espadin agave roasted in a conical stone oven over mesquite and ocote. Crushed by tahona, fermented in pine, and double-distilled in copper, it opens earthy, turns to citrus and green maguey, then finishes clean with gentle smoke. Sip it neat, or let it carry a smoky cocktail.

★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆ 3/5 AI Rating

Reviewers on Mezcal Reviews and Mezcal Pro give Xicaru Silver mixed marks — espadin-based, traditional methods, balanced smoke with maguey, mesquite, ocote, and citrus notes. Some call it a mid-$30s favorite; others find it thin for sipping and better in cocktails. Solid budget mezcal with split reception.
