The Lost Distillery Stratheden Single Malt Scotch Whisky revives a Lowland spirit first distilled in 1829 in Auchtermuchty, Fife, at a distillery run by three generations of the Bonthrone family until it closed in 1926. This modern expression is matured in sherry casks and left non-chill-filtered, echoing the original's unusual character: water drawn from the "Lover's Pool" and peat shipped in from Orkney gave the whisky a briny, coastal edge rarely found in Lowland malts. Expect dried fruit, pastry, and leather on the nose, sweet pepper and salty maritime notes on the palate. Pour it neat to catch the warm, lingering finish.
Tasting notes
Nose: Light fruit in the nose, honeyed malt, and tea biscuits with a hint of smoke
Taste: A nice mix of stone fruits and pepper in here.
Finish: The lush fruit of the beginning turns to a long, hot white pepper finish.
