Here's a whisky that's part detective story: Towiemore closed around 1930, and The Lost Distillery Company rebuilt its character as a blended malt using historical records of the original Speyside distillery, founded in the 1890s by Peter Dawson near Dufftown. Bottled at 43%, it leans into sherry, with stewed fruit, prune, peach and honey on the nose and citrus zest, oak, pepper and light toffee on the palate. Pour it neat, or add a splash of water and let it open.
Tasting notes
Nose: Juicy white peach and raspberries, with underlying hints of oily walnut.
Palate: Caramelised banana and apple, with a layer of salted butter.
Finish: Christmas spices and toasted almonds.
