Bruichladdich's team on Islay set out to bottle the whole island, foraging 22 wild botanicals — heather, gorse, elderflower, wild thistle — alongside nine classics like juniper and angelica. Everything runs through a vintage Lomond still nicknamed Ugly Betty for a slow, low-pressure 17-hour distillation. At 46% ABV, expect resiny pine and juniper up front, softened by parma violet and a faint peppery-liquorice finish. Pour it long over ice with tonic and a sprig of thyme.

Bruichladdich may not make my favorite scotch (the island alone has so many choices of the highest caliber), but boy does it make my favorite gin. When someone says, "I don't like gin," I turn to this gin, and they quickly change their mind, saying, "Oh this is good, though! What is this? " Citrus being the main focus, this gin pushes the spirit to new heights and converts erstwhile foes. Don't divulge the value of this to Bruichladdich. It is something we can never afford."

"Excellent, smooth Botanist gin makes a great martini. Due to its mellower flavor, it requires a mellower vermouth, like Martini and Rossi, alternatively it should be used in a very dry martini with barely any vermouth. Good gin for sipping. Great for those who have never tried gin."

"I adore this gin. I love a good Martini, and this is the greatest gin for one. The fact that it is made by a Scotch distillery in Islay, Scotland, serves only to confirm that this is a premium gin and says nothing about how amazing it is. (I also enjoy scotch, though I prefer Highland over Islay.) The Juniper and 21 other botanicals combine to create the ideal Martini Gin, which is incredibly clean and crisp. Although not pricey for the quality, it is a premium gin. My guideline is to always pay attention to a bartender at a high-end steakhouse, especially in Chicago! The bartender at a high-end steakhouse on the Miracle Mile in Chicago introduced me to Botanist. Don't pass up this opportunity!"
