Sandeman's story starts in 1790, when a young Scot named George Sandeman borrowed £300 from his father to launch a Port and Sherry trading house in London — his lodges still sit on the Douro riverfront in Vila Nova de Gaia. This tawny, aged in oak after grapes are hand-picked and fermented on the skins in the Douro Valley, comes in at 19.5% ABV with aromas of vanilla and dried fruit over a fresh red-fruit finish. Serve slightly chilled with crème brûlée or a wedge of blue cheese.
