Overview

Deep in Germany's Black Forest, a decades-old recipe once attributed to a monkey named Max became the blueprint for this small-batch gin. Producer Black Forest Distillers blends 47 botanicals — juniper, citrus, and local finds like lingonberry and spruce shoots — distilling in small pot stills before resting the spirit 100 days in clay vessels and cutting it with soft Black Forest spring water to 94 proof. Layered, spicy, and citrus-bright, it holds its own over ice or anchors a Negroni with real backbone.

Best Value for the Money

"Wonderfully intricate flavors and smells. Compared to other gins I've tried, seems a little bit more viscous, which results in a less watery martini after swirling. One part Dolin dry vermouth, one part gin, and one dash orange bitters (Fee Bros works great; it has more fresh citrus flavor than burnt flavor, like Bittercube) are the components of my favorite recipe. I put off doing this for years because I believed it was just expensive to snag a market niche, but it's worthwhile."

A genuine sipping gin

"Monkey 47 may be the answer to your prayers if you've ever dreamed there was a true sipping gin. The flavor profile is something to relish; there is a lot going on here, with a lovely bloom of rose petals as a finisher. In addition to being a little too expensive to pour into large, long drinks, I'd think the delicate scents would be lost on all except a 5:1 Martini. Do you have to consume this? It depends on your personal gin preferences. I personally adore my GTs and Aviations, but every so often, I desire to experience what the distiller was experiencing. The best bottle to use for that is unquestionably this one."

Take this drink responsibly

"Although this gin is excellent, please sip it neat, like a scotch. This gin is designed to be consumed by itself! Use soda rather than tonic water if you need to add anything to it at all. The fruity flavors and quinine do not go together nicely."

It's a high-quality gin.

"You won't regret purchasing this, fellas; it's a genuine gin. It tastes finest when it's served with ice, whether for tonics or any other purpose. Although a tad expensive, it gets a big thumbs up."

An Old-Fashioned, Complex Gin

"A highly distinctive and substantial gin that can stand on its own, Monkey 47 is. Let its intricacies steal the spotlight; all it requires is premium Indian tonic and a dash of lime."

Matvei Z. (5/5)

Unbelievably So, Tasty

"Best gin there is, bar none! Spend $0.50 more to get a finer tonic, or just drink it straight and mildly cooled."
