Behind this bottle sits Ryan's Beggars Bush, a Dublin pub whose family name went back on a whiskey label in 2013 after decades away. The 12-year single malt rests in ex-bourbon barrels and lands in the glass bright gold, non-chill-filtered at 46%. Expect a tropical rush of pineapple, passionfruit and citrus, then marmalade, ginger and honey folding into a malty, biscuity finish. Gold-medal history at San Francisco backs it up. Pour it neat, add a drop of water, and let it open.
Tasting notes
Nose: Intense tropical fruit aromas of passionfruit, pineapple, lemon and orange peel with a touch on cinnamon and ginger.
Palate: Smooth and oily textured. Even at the full 46% it is soft and easy to drink. Flavours of fresh pineapple, lemon, oranges, marmalade and ginger snap with some honey and oak.
Finish: Becomes more malty and biscuity with the oak flavours also shining through.
