Black Bull started life as a 1930s blend, and Duncan Taylor still builds it the old way: a bold fifty-fifty split of malt and grain, bottled at a full 50% ABV cask strength. Twelve years in refill ex-Sherry European oak and ex-Bourbon American oak give it juicy grapefruit and orange up front, then fudge, crystallized orange peel, and a warm nudge of cardamom and pepper. It earned Gold at the 2011 IWSC. Pour it neat, or let a drop of water open it up.
Tasting notes
Color: Full amber.
Nose: Robust, chunky aromas of chocolate, toffee, sherry, vanilla and lemon sherbet.
Taste: Smooth, mellow and rounded. Milk chocolate, treacle toffee, pears, green apples and lots of sweet vanilla.
Finish: Some heavier fruity notes emerge with creamy notes coming through
