Wine Regions of Spain and Portugal
Rioja's ageing ladder and grapes, plus Portugal's 250-plus native varieties and label tiers; sherry, Cava and Port have their own pages.
In one sip
Spain and Portugal tell you about time and place. Rioja labels are built around how long the wine aged; Portuguese labels lean on native grapes most drinkers have never met.
Where it started
Rioja producers agreed a common label in 1560, and the Designation of Origin was created in 1925; Rioja calls it Spain's most ancient.1 In 1991 Rioja became Spain's first Qualified Designation of Origin.1 In 2017 single-vineyard Viñedo Singular wines were added.1
Where and how it's made
Rioja permits 14 grape varieties.2 Tempranillo covers most of the vineyard, with Garnacha, Graciano, Mazuelo and Maturana Tinta; Viura has led the whites since the 1970s.3 Labels can name a zone, Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa or Rioja Oriental, or one of 144 municipalities.2
The ageing ladder for reds: - Crianza — two years, at least one in 225-litre oak.2 - Reserva — three years, at least one in oak and six months in bottle.2 - Gran Reserva — five years, two in oak and two in bottle.2
Portugal has more than 250 native grapes, including Alvarinho, Arinto, Encruzado, Baga and Touriga Nacional.4 DOC or DOP is the top tier; IGP wines, labeled Vinho Regional, need at least 85 percent of grapes from the named region.5
Sparkling, fortified and sweet: cava → sherry → port →
How to taste it
Line up a Crianza and a Gran Reserva: fruit and vanilla against leather, tobacco and dried fruit.2 Pair Rioja with lamb; pair Alvarinho with grilled fish.
