Barton 1792 Distillery in Bardstown doesn't even list this one on its own website — Very Old Barton has built its reputation almost entirely by word of mouth among bourbon geeks hunting for value. Behind the plain label: banana bread and brown sugar on the nose, caramel and vanilla up front, apple and oak carrying into a firm, drying finish. Jim Murray's Whisky Bible has scored the 80-proof pour north of 90. Try it over ice or in an easy weeknight Old Fashioned.
Tasting notes
Nose: Caramel Corn right off the bat! Slight citrus and Granny-Smith apples and a hint of baking spices.
Palate:Toffee and vanilla keep the sweetness pretty well rounded.
