Tobermory Distillery has been quietly working the Isle of Mull since 1798, and this expression traces back to the earliest spirit made after the site reopened in 1972. Aged 42 years in sherry casks and bottled at cask strength (47.7% ABV) in 2016, it's one of the rarest whiskies the distillery has ever released — only 650 bottles. Expect old oak, dried fruit, raisins, and dark chocolate on the nose, with spice and tobacco lingering into a long finish. Pour it slow, neat, in a proper glass.
Tasting notes
Nose: Massive waves of dark chocolate, tobacco, Sherry-soaked raisins and roasted chestnuts. A touch of liquorice root.
Palate: More roasted chestnut, now with notes of oily walnut and dry oak. Cherry, redcurrant, thick treacle and a touch of cracked black pepper.
Finish: Dry spices last ages on the finish, with chocolate-covered raisins bringing a balancing sweetness.
