If you love a sherry-forward Scotch, GlenDronach 18 "Allardice" is a deep dive. Named for distillery founder James Allardice, this Highland single malt spends its full 18 years in Oloroso sherry casks from Andalucia, Spain. Expect a rich nose of fudge, dark muscovado sugar and morello cherries, then a palate of stewed fruits, allspice, toasted walnut bread and chocolate orange, closing long with dark treacle. Bottled at 46%, non-chill filtered and natural in colour. Pour it neat after dinner and let it unfold.
Tasting notes
Nose: Sherry notes so thick you need a knife to cut them! There's a hint of old rum in there too, with pineapple and brown sugar in tow.
Palate: Christmas cake, rum again, chocolate-coated hazelnut, runny honey and a hint of Sauternes.
Finish: Fresh blackcurrant, blueberry pancakes with a generous helping of maple syrup.
