Overview

More Info

To make this one-of-a-kind spirit, Master Blender, Dave Carpenter, took our trademark Redemption Rye (95% rye, 5% malted barley mashbill) and finished it in Jamaican and Barbadian rum barrels. The result is an intriguing romance between the signature spice of Redemption Rye and the complex sweetness imparted on the rum barrels. The aging process required meticulous monitoring to achieve the perfect balance of these flavors. The resulting spirit was named “Best American Rye Whiskey” at the 2021 World Whiskies Competition.

Tasting notes

Taste: Rye spice notes of caraway, clove and white pepper complimented by tropical rum notes of sultana raisins, guava and passionfruit. The Barbadian casks give a warming richness up front, while the Jamaican casks impart an earthy, fruity finish on the back end.

Finish: Light and breathy with golden raisins dusted in a whisper of ceylon cinnamon with different lengths of finish that help balance the sweetness of the younger barrels with the soft tannin and baking spice of the longer finish.

Reviews

The aftertaste has a pleasing sweetness. A pretty solid rye.

"After reading a review I bought it. It was really fun to do. It's not the best rum barrel finish I've tried, but it's rather excellent value for the money IMO. Less pricey than Angel's Envy, as an example, but not nearly as silky. Would definitely recommend for the pricing range if you want a spicy rye with more sweet overtones."

— Choon-Hee (4/5)

One of a Kind Taste

"Being a fan of both rum (Appletons) and bourbon (Makers Mark), I was eager to experience a combination of the flavors but wasn't willing to spend $90 on Angels Envy, which I'm sure is fantastic. The first taste (neat) and the first taste on rocks left me feeling a little underwhelmed. This material truly sprang to life when some crushed ice started to melt. Each subsequent sip was better than the one before it since the flavors of the rum and bourbon had somewhat separated. A pretty distinctive flavor that, in my opinion, may use some diluting. Definitely going to recommend and repurchase."

Fantastic Rye with a Rum Barrel Finish

"My wife and I both enjoy dark rums and rieslings. This is a wonderful sipping spirit that makes it possible to appreciate the rye whiskey's rum barrel characteristics."

— Elke W. (5/5)

The aftertaste has a pleasing sweetness. A pretty solid rye.

— Choon-Hee (4/5)

No doubt will continue to drink.

"I figured I'd give it a shot because I enjoy Redemption's high rye and bourbon, and this was even better. Dark, smooth tastes with a hint of vanilla and caramel. The next time I drink, for sure."

— Kwanza I. (4/5)

Redemption Rye Rum Cask is a potent beverage.

"Wonderful rye. For me, ice alone with no water was ideal because I like my drinks on the lighter side. I liked it. It's gone in minutes."

— Adnet L. (4/5)

Worth the additional cost.

"One bottle I bought was fantastic. Rye with a rum cask finish is very flowery and delicious. I bought some because I can't locate it on the shelf right now. Worth every penny of the extra cost. Recovery is wonderful."

— Dexter F. (5/5)

Exceptional Value for a Rye

"It's difficult to find a finished rye that is as well-crafted and tasty for the money as this release. Smooth from the beginning, with a delicious, burn-free finish."

— Demetrio P. (4/5)

The Rye is Delish!

"Tasty. Whiskey dominates, with a rum aftertaste. Smooth on its own and fantastic with blended mango, cherimoya, and coconut milk."

— Guillory (5/5)

Definitely Must Try, Smooth With Great Notes Of Caramel.

"I purchased the first bottle for a family gathering. We are all bourbon enthusiasts and were looking for something new to share. For the happiness it brought, I bought the following three bottles."

— Custance G. (5/5)

What people across the internet are saying

★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆ 3/5 AI Rating

Reviewers on Breaking Bourbon and Whiskey Wash call Redemption Rum Cask Rye an easy drinker with raisin and stewed-cherry sweetness from the Plantation rum finish, but flag a flawed tannic finish. Distiller users give it middling marks; at $35 it's fairly priced but not a slam dunk.
