"Within the price range, this is one of the most tasty and intriguing low-cost rums. When you first taste it, you're greeted with a deep caramel sweetness and a hint of tannin from the barrel. The smell of rotten bananas, which is characteristic of many Jamaican runs, slowly starts to come through. As it winds down, the rich fruit and caramel tastes start to mimic much darker dried fruits, similar to what I've tasted in a fine cognac. Once it starts to move through your body, there is a significant amount of burn, but it's really not that horrible. For a Mai Tai or Hot Buttered Rum drink, this dark rum is ideal. This has a little bit of everything that makes rum exceptional, in my opinion, even though I do find the five-year Plantation Grande Reserve to be a lot more complicated spirit. Burnt sugar, a bit of banana, a little sweetness, a little funk, some barrel spice. . . I could continue. Get a bottle for yourself because it works well in most Tiki drinks."
