Overview

Basil Hayden Sr. - known as Old Grand-Dad to the generations that followed - made bourbon the way he wanted. He went against the traditional “grain” of the time and chose to distill his bourbon with a higher percentage of rye. This way of crafting bourbon was likely something he handed down to his son. And in turn, his grandson. That was Colonel R.B. Hayden who would justly name his bourbon after his Old Grand-Dad. The recipe today remains inspired by Basil’s original with complex flavors and an unmistakable spiciness. First bottled in 1882, very little has changed about it. And that’s the only way we’d have it.
Tasting notes

Aroma: A spicy nose with hints of dried fruits

Taste: Medium-bodied – shows some sweet vanilla, but more evident is the peppery spiciness displayed by notes of cloves and cinnamon

Reviewers on Thirty-One Whiskey and bourbon forums call OGD 80 a solid no-surprises bourbon — pronounced caramel and peppery rye spice from the 27% rye mashbill. Most agree it shines in cocktails like Kentucky Mules more than neat. Mixed-to-positive value consensus.

Golden Age. familiar faces. senile grandpa

"Evan Williams Black Label is my preferred brand, but I occasionally treat myself to Old Grand Dad. This Bourbon is notable due to its rye flavor and robust body. This is probably the closest thing you can find to the original bourbon flavor. makes you reflect on everything that has changed and everything that hasn't since that time. What exactly hasn't changed, you ask? The adoration for this Bourbon"

Decent as a four-grain mixed

"Henry McKenna has been thrown into the mix. After blending, you'll get a 4 grain whiskey that hits all the right notes (for a young bourbon, mind you) for $23 per 1. 5L. If you can, try to find a 4 grain bourbon for that price and let me know! When these two are combined, the mash bill is 73% corn, 5% rye, 10% wheat, and 12% malted barley. Just a hint of spice and no five alarm fire are the results of very low rye content. It won't be as sweet as typical wheated bourbons available on the market without rye because the sweetness from the wheat has been reduced to 10% by blending."

Gets You to Think and Sit Down.

"Even at its current price range, Old Grand Dad Whiskey is quite fantastic stuff. The nose is dominated by oak and leather notes, which continue over the tongue. It has a very strong, masculine aroma. Old Grand Dad blends well with other ingredients in beverages while retaining its oaky flavor. This bourbon's over-the-rocks sipping makes you sit down and truly think, just like having a conversation with its namesake. I like it better than the few other comparable priced whiskies I've had the (questionable) honor of trying."

Wonderful Thing.

"Strong and surprisingly delicious bonded bourbon. A historical observation is that Old Grand Dad had a real name. Basil Hayden was there. Wonderful thing."

A top-notch bonded bottle

"Because of the substantial rye grain bill, this is one of my favorites. Undoubtedly a steal at this price, but one of the best bonded bottles in any price range."
