Five times, the World Whiskies Awards named this the World's Best Blended Malt — 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. Taketsuru 21 is a vatting of malts aged at least 21 years from Nikka's two distilleries: bold, maritime Yoichi on Hokkaido's coast and refined Miyagikyo in the mountains of Miyagi. It's named for Masataka Taketsuru, the founder who brought whisky-making home from Scotland and earned the title of father of Japanese whisky.
Nikka ended the age-statement Taketsuru line in 2020 to protect its aging stocks, and no bottles have shipped since — what remains is a finite piece of the category's history. Expect ripe fruit and caramelized apple over spice and oak, with a long finish that drifts gently coastal. One of the most decorated Japanese malts ever bottled, and it drinks like it.
