High on Mt. Veeder's steep slopes—750 to 1,250 feet up in the Mayacamas Mountains—Newton grows Cabernet in well-drained sedimentary soil that pushes the vines toward structure over softness. It shows: cassis, cedar, and wet slate up front, coal dust and graphite running through a focused, intense palate with fine, mineral tannin and cool black currant fruit. Built on eighteen-year-old vines and patient barrel aging, it's a mountain Cab meant for a steak dinner and a slow evening.
