Overview

More Info

There's a gusano — an agave worm — resting at the bottom of every bottle, a nod to old-school Oaxacan mezcal tradition dating back to the 1940s. Monte Alban is made from espadín agave grown in Oaxaca and distilled the time-honored way, giving it that signature campfire smoke over roasted agave, black pepper, and a mineral edge. Bottled at 80 proof. Sip it neat and slow, or let its smoke carry a mezcal Negroni. Sip Something New.

★ ★ ☆ ☆ ☆ 2/5 AI Rating

Reviewers on Mezcal.report scored Monte Alban 1.5/5 and Mezcal Reviews call it a 'gusano-novelty' — thin, chemically sweet, paint-thinner notes. Distiller crowd treats it as a souvenir bottle. Historically credited with introducing Americans to mezcal but widely panned by modern reviewers.

"I started drinking Mezcal before it became the latest “in” drink and was a little know treasure. It’s not Tequila, never claimed to be, it is the drink of the people. Mezcal…. . it has a smooth, complex flavor, blends well with lime juice for a traditional Margarita or when served strait up with a touch of the spice packet it comes alive when sipped. It’s not just a drink, it’s an experience. I wished it had a bit smokier flavor, but it is awesome. I bought my first bottle back in 2007 and have never looked back…."
