Named for Kiichiro Iwai, the engineer who mentored Masataka Taketsuru and helped launch Japanese whisky itself, this bottle comes from Mars Shinshu's mountain distillery in Nagano, sitting nearly 800 meters up between the Japanese Alps. The mash leans heavily bourbon — 75% corn, 25% malted barley — matured in ex-bourbon barrels, so expect baked apple, vanilla, butterscotch, and toffee up front before it settles into a drier, tea-like finish. Pour it over ice or build it into a whisky highball.
Tasting notes
Spicy with honeyed sweetness, this whisky gets some texture from a hint of yellow peach and pineapple, pinecone and strong clove, nutmeg, cinnamon and green peppercorn spiciness. It's a decent neat sipper, but the cocktail potential (or highball) is what it's all about
