Matured twice in American oak, Laphroaig Quarter Cask presents an irresistible doubling of flavor.Because the second maturation takes place in smaller, quarter-sized casks, the spirit has more contact with wood. This lends hints of coconut, banana and vanilla to the instantly recognizable Laphroaig flavor of smoky peat complemented by a surprising sweetness.It should be enjoyed alone, over ice or with a splash of water to fully pay tribute to the unique flavor. Laphroaig Quarter Cask begins its maturation in ex-bourbon barrels and, while still aging, is transferred to small quarter casks. Aging in smaller barrels revives an old tradition, paying tribute to the master distillers who have perfected the Laphroaig process over two centuries.

Tasting notes

Nose: Oily and buttery nose, with toffee, nuttiness, hickory, bicarbonate of soda, rum and raisin ice cream and zest.

Palate: Big rush of sweetness, in fact it’s an explosion of sweetness, with fiery chilli heat, TCP, sweet cereals and a touch of cola syrup.

Finish: Medium-length, but becomes fruity, with custard and cigar smoke.

Worth Spending Some Time Learning To Appreciate This Dram.

"I'm coming to realize how much I enjoy peated Single Malt Scotch Whisky. The distilleries of Islay produce excellent alcohol. It might take some getting used to, as in the past I favored Glenmorangie because it is smoother. The flavor of Laphroaig is quite complex and changes as it is consumed. This Scotch should be sipped slowly. I don't recoil and swallow quickly. I enjoy it while rolling it around."

"This was first tested a few years ago. Although it had a greater wood flavor than the typical 10 YO, I didn't particularly enjoy the camphor fragrance. Recently, I tried some again during a tasting and discovered that the camphor was missing. Still very strong peat flavor with a slight maltiness in the finish, but the quarter casks provide a good counterpoint."

"The QC delivers on all fronts, giving you the complexity, flavor explosion, LONG finish, and sipping experience of a scotch that would cost double or triple what the QC does. It's a jewel. I love the 10 year and anything Ardbeg, but the QC is a unique experience. If that weren't enough, the QC is an Islay and you can tell that right on the nose. The rich, peaty scent hits your nose without knocking you out. There is sweetness, dark chocolate, peat, smoke, BBQ, and more on the palate."

"At this price point, this is the best Scotch I've ever tried. The smaller quarter cask implies a higher surface to air ratio and, hence, a more quicker maturation. Every Scotch drinker is aware of how strong Laphroaig is. The quarter cask is meant to represent softer undertones in the Laphroaig product line, but the core flavors are still strong, persistent, and distinctly aromatic. It would be dishonest to omit the presence of tar overtones in any Laphroaig in addition to the smokey and floral tones, which are undoubtedly present. However, it produces a pleasant sensation of conflicting flavors and scents when combined with the other, more delicate and subtle flavors."

"After experimenting with the 10 year and 10 year CS, I bought a bottle of QC. I'm beginning to enjoy it more than the 10-year-old. Incredible cask strength. This is a middle grounder. When first opened, it had a strong, somewhat disagreeable (mainly simply overbearing) wood or oak flavor, but as the fill level dropped, it dramatically improved. I still have about 3/4 of the bottle, and I really enjoy it."

"For those who enjoy scotch with a very potent flavor, this is a great choice. There is a lot of smoke in this. I would enjoy a glass of this. The second glass has an overwhelming flavor. At the end of the second glass, all I can taste because of the smoke's intensity is ash. Unusual and definitely worth a try if you want a strong smoky flavor."

"The 10 year is ok, but lacks the smokiness of the 15 year old, and I don't have enough money to try the 20+ versions. Laphroaig 10 is still my go-to SM scotch in the affordable category, er was. I welcome Quarter cask to my top shelf. It has everything I remember good about 15 plus more. Some scotches deserve the recognition of having them once a wee while. The Laphroaig Quarter barrel would make me rethink how often I indulge in this magnificent beverage."

"This is everything you love about the 10 year old turned up to eleven! If you enjoy the 10 year, you will LOVE this. I bought this out of curiosity because the 10 is a mainstay on my shelf and I felt like stretching my horizons with Laphroaig a little. The nose is one of the most incredible Islay experiences you will ever have, with layers of smoked meat, honey, brown sugar, and BBQ sauce, as well as salty sea spray and seaweed. The palate is very complex for this price point, with layers of BBQ, smoked meat, brown sugar, and charred wood. The finish is less medicinal than the 10 year and more sweet. The finish is medium-bodied and has the familiar, pleasant Laphroaig tingle remain. I adore the 10 year, but as long as this is offered, it will take its place on my shelf. This is simply essential."
