Islay's Laphroaig pushes into experimental territory with Elements 2.0, distilled after fermentations stretched to 115 hours instead of the usual 55—a slow build that coaxes out tropical fruit notes long before peat ever gets its say. Bottled cask strength near 60% ABV, non-chill filtered, it opens with stewed apple and orange peel, moves through honey and cream soda, and finishes on warming smoke and red berries. Whisky Advocate named it 2024's Whisky of the Year. Pour it neat, add a splash of water, and let the smoke unfold slowly.
Tasting notes
On the nose, you’ll notice intensity of the peat smoke and green apple, followed by a warmth of ginger. More smoke comes when you taste, along with runny honey, cream soda and vanilla. The long and lingering finish “leaves smokiness sitting like a blanket”, with a hint of red berries.
