Insignia is Joseph Phelps' flagship red, first poured in 1974 as California's original proprietary Bordeaux-style blend. Each vintage is built mostly from estate-grown Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, rounded out with small amounts of Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc, then aged roughly two years in French oak. Expect a perfumed nose of dark fruit and cigar box leading into layers of blackberry, mocha, and black cherry, framed by silky, seamless tannins. Pour it alongside a well-marbled steak or aged hard cheese for an occasion worth marking.
