New York Distilling Company in Brooklyn spent over a decade chasing down Horton Rye, an heirloom grain that hadn't been grown commercially since the 1800s, starting from just ten saved seeds before it took root again in New York's Finger Lakes. This single barrel release is 75% Horton Rye, aged seven years and bottled at cask strength, 114-116 proof, with a wax seal and its own inscribed number. Pour it neat to catch the spice and grain, or add a splash of water to open it up.
Tasting notes
The concentration of sugars results in a unique and delicious range of aromas and flavors that belie the assumption that rye whiskey is spicy.
