Raasay didn't have a legal distillery until 2017 — despite centuries of whisky history on this tiny Inner Hebridean island. R&B Distillers changed that, drawing water from a Celtic Iron Age well and blending peated and unpeated spirit across six cask types: first-fill ex-rye whiskey, virgin Chinkapin oak, and Bordeaux red wine. The result is lightly smoky with dark cherry, blackberry, and a warm cinnamon-pepper kick. Bottled at 46.4% ABV, non-chill filtered. Pour it neat to let the smoke and fruit unfold slowly.
Tasting notes
Nose: Notes of sour beer, fermented wash and dried grass, as well as a touch of copper. There’s a whiff of grapefruit, but also earthy smoke, geraniums, subtle touches of citrus, and overripe green apple.
Taste: Subtle peat, a fair amount of smoked barley husks and peanut skins. Some ashy mezcal, a pinch of pepper and lemon zest to finish things off.
Finish: Some vanilla, apple peel and spices.
