Arneis is one of Piedmont's rare white grapes, and Ian Brand—a San Francisco Chronicle Winemaker of the Year—coaxes a California version from the Vista Verde Vineyard in San Benito County, where vines sit around 800 feet up in gravelly, limestone-fractured soil. It's barrel-fermented with native yeasts and rested six months on the lees, giving a nose of pear blossom and jasmine and a palate of apricot, peach pit and bosc pear with a whisper of wet-stone minerality. Pour it chilled alongside grilled fish.
