First things first: Glendalough was the first Irish distillery to finish its whiskey in Mizunara, the rare Japanese oak from Hokkaido. This single malt spends seven years in ex-bourbon casks before that Mizunara finish works its quiet magic. Expect a bright, fruity nose of orchard fruit and citrus, then a palate of biscuity malt, vanilla and honey layered with dark-chocolate orange, sandalwood and cinnamon. The finish runs long and spiced. Bottled at 46%, it's one to sip slow and neat.
Tasting notes
Nose: Sandalwood, orange zest, vanilla pod, and milk chocolate.
Palate: Chocolatey notes continue, with toasted cinnamon and five-spice, plus juicy apricot and nectarine.
Finish: Flaky pastry, brown sugar, lemon peel, anise.
