Most fernet pours out of big Milanese factories — this one is hand-made in tiny batches at Switzerland's Matter Distillery, following a hand-written recipe bought in 1930 from a shuttered Italian house. Saffron lends golden flecks to its near-black color, while myrrh, gentian, anise, angelica and aloe build the bitterness and cool mint keeps it in balance. At 44% ABV, pour it chilled and neat as a digestivo, or send it into a Fernet & Cola or a Toronto.
