Far Niente's Chardonnay was the very first wine the winery made, back in 1981, and it's been quietly refining the style since 1885 from their Oakville home. Most of the fruit comes from Coombsville, a cooler pocket of Napa Valley with volcanic ash and gravelly loam soils that keep the grapes bright. Fermentation starts in steel, finishes in French oak, then rests on the lees for months, giving layers of melon, citrus, and toasted hazelnut. Pour it alongside roast chicken or something buttery.
