Here's a Speyside malt that happily breaks the mold. Craigellachie 13 leans muscular and fruit-forward instead of the region's usual delicate style, thanks in part to the distillery's old-school worm tub condensers. Matured in ex-bourbon and sherry casks, it lands on toasted marshmallow, fire-roasted pineapple, and clove-studded baked apple, with a smoky whiff the distillery calls Bonfire Night. Bottled at 46%, non-chill filtered, no added colour. Pour it neat and let those exotic fruits open up.
Tasting notes
Nose: Apple orchards in bloom, slightly meaty, burnt popcorn, treacle tart.
Palate: Oily malt arrives first, followed by BBQ pineapple and summer berries. Pine nuts and almonds.
Finish: A very soft hint of sulphur hides behind biscuit and apple notes.
