Behind this Cabernet sits one of Napa's most photographed wineries: the postmodern estate that Jan and Mitsuko Shrem opened in 1987, designed by architect Michael Graves. The wine drinks like the setting looks, layered and deliberate. Estate Napa fruit gives cassis and black currant up front, then a smoky turn toward cigar box, graphite, and leather, with balanced tannins carrying a long finish. Decant it, pour alongside a peppercorn-crusted steak or aged cheddar, and let it stretch out.
