Armagnac is France's oldest brandy, distilled in small column stills that leave more of the fruit intact than cognac's pot stills — and Clos Martin's XO spends a full 15 years mellowing in oak in Bas-Armagnac before bottling. Expect stewed plums, cigar box, and a nutty spice on the nose, rounding out on the palate into almond, prune, and coffee bean, with a long, soft, plummy finish. Pour a small glass after dinner and let it sit a few minutes to open up.
Tasting notes
Clos Martin XO offers rich notes of dried plums, light toffee and vanilla on the nose. An initial burst of dry oaky tannins followed by a little spice, with a dry spirity finish.
