Overview

More Info

Here's a single malt with a beer-lover's soul. Central City's Surrey, BC distillery builds this one on highly kilned chocolate malted barley, then rests it in French Sauternes wine barrels for a genuinely different sip. Expect vanilla and chocolate up front, unfolding into complex dark fruit and a mild sweetness at 43% ABV. Pour it neat after dinner, or set it beside something chocolate and dessert-forward and let the malt do the talking.

Chocolate!!

"Tonight’s dram takes me back up north to the west coast of British Columbia, Canada, to the Central City Brewery/Distillery. I wasn’t crazy about their signature dram, but the chocolate malt was just too tempting to pass-up. Their Lohin McKinnon Chocolate Malt is not chocolate flavored, but uses chocolate malted barley – the process of heavily roasting barley (typically two-row or six-row barley) to get the rich dark colors and flavors found in porters and stouts (my favorite beers). It opens with vanilla, chocolate, lots of milk chocolate, and orange slices, followed by dried cherries covered semi-sweet in chocolate, tart green apples, charred oak, and cocoa-encrusted toasted almonds, finishing with malt sweetness, light roast coffee, Nutella, truffle-like earthiness, candied lime peel, a squeeze of lemon, and roasted chestnuts. Wow! This is a radical departure of their somewhat-disappointing signature dram. If you like chocolate, any type of chocolate, this is a must-try dram. It’s hard to believe all this chocolate flavor could come from something with zero chocolate. I am soooooooooooooo glad I didn’t give-up on Lohin McKinnon on the first try. Drink slow, drink long, drink a variety, drink often."
