If you've been curious about smoky whiskey but wary of anything heavy-handed, Basil Hayden Subtle Smoke is a gentle way in. It starts with the brand's signature high-rye Kentucky straight bourbon, then finishes in secondary barrels where hickory smoke gets pumped in for a soft, layered char. Expect mellow smoke and sweet vanilla on the nose, butterscotch and maple across the palate, and a crisp, delicate smoky finish. At 80 proof, it's easygoing neat or over a single big cube.
