Back in the 1930s, a bartender at Manhattan's Club 21 started splashing brandy into Bénédictine, and the idea stuck. By 1937 the abbey liqueur house made it official: 60% Bénédictine, that centuries-old blend of 27 herbs and spices, married with 40% fine French brandy, then rested in old oak casks that once aged cognac. The result runs drier and spicier than most herbal liqueurs, with dried-fruit aromas and a honeyed finish. Pour it over ice in a cognac glass after dinner.
