Here's a Japanese single malt with an unexpected backstory: it comes from Eigashima Shuzo, a Hyogo sake and shochu house that earned Japan's first whisky license back in 1919. Distilled from lightly peated barley at the seaside White Oak distillery in Akashi, it matures in a mix of ex-bourbon and sherry casks right beside the Seto Inland Sea, picking up gentle smoke and a faint briny edge alongside orchard fruit and vanilla. Bottled at 46%. Pour it neat, or over one big cube.
Tasting notes
Nose: Herbs and pine on the nose, rather forest like. Some white grape. Dry oak, with lavender and floral undertones. Some tobacco smoke.
Palate: Rich malt with pungent grapes. Pine note is there again. Oak and floral notes accompany slightly bitter cirtus rind. Very faint pork.
Finish: Oak, vanilla and wood spice. Medium.
