The first release in Suntory's annual Story of the Distillery series is a love letter to the place Hakushu calls home: a "forest distillery" founded in 1973 some 700 meters up in the Southern Japanese Alps of Yamanashi Prefecture. This 2024 Edition vats lightly smoky Hakushu malt matured in bourbon casks, bottled at 43% ABV, with a label in Hakushu's signature green celebrating the newly renovated distillery.
In the glass it's the fresh, herbal house style that made Hakushu famous — pineapple, vanilla cream, and roasted green tea on the nose, a soft wasanbon-like sweetness on the palate, and a gentle drift of ember smoke on the finish. A forest whisky through and through, and the bottle that started the series.
