Before Japanese whisky had waiting lists, Masataka Taketsuru sailed to Glasgow to learn distilling — then came home and founded Nikka. This 17 year old pure malt carries his name and his blueprint: malts aged at least 17 years at Yoichi, his rugged coastal Hokkaido distillery, and Miyagikyo, its elegant counterpart in the hills outside Sendai, with a generous share of sherry-cask maturation in the mix.
The awards are real and repeated — World's Best Blended Malt at the World Whiskies Awards in 2014, 2015 and 2018. Nikka retired the age-statement Taketsuru range in 2020, so every remaining bottle comes from a closed chapter of Japanese whisky. In the glass: yellow plum, old leather, toffee and mocha.
