Overview

The latest from Master Blender Allen Smith, Black Barrel is a small batch, handcrafted blend made of matured double pot distillates and aged column distillates. In a process called finishing, the blended rum is then matured for a second time in deeply charred Bourbon oak barrels. This unique process releases spicy aromas that are at once balanced, and bold.

Aromas: Complex notes of spice, toasted wood, followed by fruit

Taste: Bold spice balanced with oaky vanilla and sweet caramel

Body: Warm medium body with long finish

A good drink for the price

"The aromas are of mixed red fruits, cream, musky cask, Eau de cologne, dark wood, eggnog, barn funk, cocoa, hay, brown sugar, and fruitcake. The flavors are of honey comb, vanilla, spice, cinnamon spice, milk cream, and bourbon influence. Age? the coloring caramel? The bottle is silent. Conclusion: 6. 5/10, if you can find this bottle for less than $30. Overall, a well-made rum with a little bit of a weird scent and a young flavor."

Creates a Wild Mojito

"For rum beverages, Mount Gay rum has always been my go-to blending spirit. indubitably better than Bacardi and comparable mid-range rum goods. The 1703 Black Barrel's bourbon barrel aging also adds a pleasant smokiness and a depth of flavors that other rums lack. I also found a fantastic recipe for a lemon mojito: 3 ounces of rum, 6 ounces of fresh lemonade, 10 mint leaves, and a dash of cranberry juice. Outrageous."

Ideal for OJ

"For the price this rum is exceptional. Vanilla comes through. Just dark enough to add a really good taste without being over powering. A top restaurant in Charleston now stocks this rum at my request and they are always re-ordering. I spend a good amount of time in the West Indies and this rum is better than many much pricier."

Excellent with a squeeze of lime and some ice.

"This rum has a crisp, fresh edge that makes it sour and unsuitable for sipping neat. I tried using it as a mixer, but the tastes don't really come through. I've discovered that pouring Mount Gay Black Barrel over an ice cube and adding a squeeze of lime juice to it is the greatest way to enjoy it. Its flavor is only slightly softened by the ice and lime to make it an excellent sipping beverage."

Fantastic Bajan Rum

"The taste is a little bit alcoholic but not overbearing, with notes of vanilla and caramel. On the nose, it smells like a fine Bourbon, delicate and fruity with some vanilla. This is when it really shines, adding some banana flavor with just a splash of water. This has become a new favorite of mine, and I can't wait to compare it to other Mount Gay expressions."

This rum has a wonderful smoothness.

"This rum has a sweet, spicy flavor and is very smooth. If you're looking for a cheap, simple beverage, I wholeheartedly recommend this one. On this one, quality definitely matches price."

High Caliber and Affordable Rum

"That was a great rum that we loved on the rocks with a twist. It was also perfect for the 1944 Trader Vic's Mai Tai recipe. On par with Appleton and Zaya in terms of flavor, smoothness, and nose."

Ryker L. (5/5)

This Rum is what I keep on hand in my home bar.

"I've been keeping Mount Gay Eclipse Heritage Blend at my home bar for the past few years. It was an accident, but I'm glad I found it. It works great in the batter for brunch French toast and is the ideal well-rounded rum for any cocktail."

Emilliano (5/5)

Unexpectedly Excellent.

"As a treat, I gave this a try because I usually drink Mt. Gay. Even the most discerning rum drinker would be disappointed by how good it was. a squeeze of lime and a dash of soda. . . Excellent. . ."

Ivan8R (5/5)

Almost too Bourbon-like

"This was a gift, and the bourbon flavor from the casks is very intense. I only gave this product two stars because I don't like bourbon and I would never buy it."
