Here's a single malt with a serious backstory: Morris of Rutherglen has been crafting fortified wines in Victoria, Australia since 1859, and in 2016 they revived a 1930s hybrid copper pot-and-column still to make whisky. Distilled from 100% Australian grain and matured in barrels from the family cooperage, it's then finished in Morris fortified wine casks. Expect orchard fruits, black cherries and shortbread on the nose, with zesty marmalade, cocoa and blackberry through the finish. Sip it neat and let those wine-cask layers unfold.
Tasting notes
Nose: Fruity from the start with crisp apples and pears balancing the rich depth of dried fruits and dark chocolate.
Palate: Biscuity malt with mounds of dark cherries and berries, bitter dark chocolate, and zingy orange zest.
Finish: Rich and unctuous, the boozy soaked fruits continue with fruit cake sweetness and spice.
