Campbeltown is one of Scotland's smallest whisky regions - just a handful of working distilleries - and Glengyle only reopened in 2004 after 80 dark years. This heavily peated single malt, Batch No. 9, is bottled cask strength at 59.2% ABV from mostly ex-bourbon casks with a touch of sherry, natural colour, non-chill-filtered. Expect shortbread and banana loaf on the nose, custard cream and brine on the palate, finishing on peat smoke and gooseberry. Pour it neat, or add a few drops of water to open it up.
Tasting notes
Nose - Notes of freshly baked shortbread, cream soda, banana loaf and coconut shavings introduce this heavily peated dram.
Palate - The creamy, vanilla notes carry through to the palate in notes of buttered digestive biscuits and custard creams.
Finish - The peat is prominent in the finish, along with hints of gooseberries to round off this dram.
