If you love a Bordeaux-style red with California sunshine behind it, DAOU's Reserve Seventeen Forty is a fun one to explore. This Paso Robles blend leans on Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot, aged 20 months in mostly new French oak. Expect blackberry, blueberry jam and black cherry layered with coffee, vanilla and a whisper of sage and mocha, finishing with fresh acidity and balanced tannins. Pour it for a slow dinner or a steak worth lingering over.
