Dad's Hat, the Bristol, Pennsylvania distillery, does something unusual with its barrels: it lends empty rye casks to Somerset County maple producers, who age syrup in the whiskey-soaked wood for months. Dad's Hat then reclaims those maple-saturated barrels to finish its 80% rye mashbill whiskey — no added flavoring, just what the wood picked up. Expect honey-glazed pecans and maple pralines on the nose, rye spice riding through subtle maple sweetness, and a luscious mouthfeel on the finish. Pour it neat or into a fall-leaning Old Fashioned.
Tasting notes
Nose is woody and herbaceous.
Bold and spicy rye flavor with a bit of heat on the back of the tongue. Initial rye notes gives way to subtle flavors of citrus, cinnamon, nuts and rock candy.
Lingering, medium-long finish.
