What is Hu Gu Jiu (Tiger Bone Liqueur)?
Hu Gu Jiu is a traditional Chinese herbal liqueur — a spirit infused with a formula of herbs, historically prepared by martial artists and Chinese doctors. Beijing Tongrentang, founded in 1669, is among the most storied producers of traditional Chinese herbal preparations. There are as many variations of this formula as there are of Dit Da Jow, each producer guarding its own blend.
Does it contain real tiger bone?
No. Traditionally the formula was based around tiger bone, but in modern times — with the tiger's endangerment and international protections — the bone is either substituted with herbs regarded as having the same effect or left out altogether.
