Barrell's Private Release series exists to chase a single idea to its most interesting conclusion, and DHC5 does exactly that. Built around a blend of Kentucky whiskeys anchored by an 18-year-old component, it spends extra time resting in a Chardonnay barrel from Marine Layer's Gap's Crown Vineyard, picking up a layer of orchard-fruit and honeyed-oak character on top of its deep, well-aged bourbon backbone. Bottled at cask strength near 58.6% ABV, it rewards a splash of water and slow sipping by the fire.
