World Whiskey Day Must Haves

World Whiskey Day Must Haves

Whiskey (or whisky) is a type of distilled alcoholic made from fermented grains, typically barley, corn, rye, or wheat. The production of whiskey involves several steps, including malting, mashing, fermentation, distillation, and maturation in wooden barrels. The origin of whiskey is disputed, with both Scotland and Ireland claiming to be its birthplace; however, whiskey is now produced in many countries around the world, including the United States, Japan, Canada, and Australia.

Whiskey can be categorized into several different types, including single malt, blended, bourbon, rye, and Irish whiskey, among others. The flavor and aroma of whiskey can vary widely depending on the type of grain used, the distillation and aging process, and other factors. Choose from our whiskey must haves list to enjoy neat, with a splash of water or ice or as a Manhattan, Old Fashioned, or Whiskey Sour on World Whiskey Day on May 21!

Sagamore Spirit

Sagamore Spirit Reserve Series celebrates the legacy of Maryland distilling, with an unyielding focus on excellence from start to finish. Their distillers were committed to bring back this complex and layered whiskey for the world to enjoy.

Sagamore Spirit - Reserve Series Sherry Finish Rye Whiskey ($107.99)

First released as a Distillery Exclusive bottle in 2019, their distillers were committed to bring back this complex and layered whiskey for the world to enjoy. The structured oak profile of the original whiskey balances the bouquet of dried fruit and honey left from the PX Sherry wine. The 4-year-old straight rye whiskey spent an additional 18 months in 132-gallon PX Sherry barrels.

Tasting Notes: Toasted almond, dried fig, raisins, dates, honey, toffee, candied orange peel, jam, soft spice and hints of cocoa.

Sagamore Spirit - Rum Cask Finish Rye Whiskey ($94.99)

This second iteration of the Rum Cask Finish Rye Whiskey celebrates the innovation and creativity of the Sagamore Spirit Reserve Series. They aged their 5 and 6-year-old straight rye whiskies in hand-selected barrels from South America and Jamaica for an additional 10 months and then blended them back together.

Tasting Notes: Demerara sugar, ripe banana, passion fruit, spice pineapple, vanilla, fried floras, peanut brittle, and cinnamon bark with a peppery finish.

HVEN

To create this product with the most enticing character possible, the ingredients are distilled in proprietary small copper pot stills. Only the best organic grains are selected from a few certified farmers to create this line. Everything, including the hand bottling, is done on site at the Hven Backafallsbyn Distillery, the third pot still distillery built in Sweden.

Spirit of Hven Distillery - HVEN Hvenus Rye Whisky ($79.99)

Hvenus is a unique rye whisky that is elegant and velvet smooth, yet powerful and flavorsome. Every batch comprises 42 casks blended together, aerated and very gently filtered before bottling at 45.6 %vol. No charcoal filtration, no color or sugar is added.

Tasting Notes: The first scent on the nose reveals dark chocolate and deep notes from the heavy charred, air-dried American oak, it is followed up by notes of creamy almond carrot cake. Balance lands mid-front tongue highlighting the creamy sweet-peppery rye character.

Spirit of Hven Distillery - HVEN MerCurious Corn Whisky ($66.99)

MerCurious is one of the most delicate whisky recipes ever made and balanced at Hven. Every batch comprises 14 casks, all playing an important tune in this masterpiece. All casks are made of American air-dried virgin oak.

Tasting Notes: The first notes attracting the nose are light, sweet candy aromas surrounded by scents of fresh fruits; apples and cloudberries. First it is almost sparkling, fresh and vibrant then it transforms into a full bodied sweet and sour pie.

Spirit of Hven Distillery - HVEN Organic Tycho's Star Single Malt Whisky ($124.99)

Tycho’s Star is a medium peated well matured Swedish single malt whisky, made from grain to bottle. This whisky is named Tycho’s Star as a tribute to the most famous islander yet, the astronomer Tycho Brahe.

Tasting Notes: The whisky uncovers the soft balanced notes of the barley mash-bill, the chocolate malt becomes more evident and the smoke and peat a bit rounder. The fruitiness matures a fraction and moves to ripe apples and hints of licorice.

Sneaky Peat

Sneaky Peat is a blend of Single Malt Scotches with, as the name denotes, just a hint of peat.  It’s the culmination of a years-long journey to produce a high-quality pure malt blended Scotch whisky at a reasonable price.

Sneaky Peat - Blended Malt Scotch Whiskey ($52.99)

A masterful blend of Highland single malt scotch whiskies with just a touch of peat. Suitably refined to enjoy neat or on the rocks, but distinct enough to accentuate your favorite cocktail, is a 100% malt whisky with no grain alcohol fillers.

Tasting Notes: An elegant dram, whether neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail. There’s just a hint of the Scottish peat that carries its age-borne complexity to a smooth, calm finish, without dominating everything else or resulting in palate fatigue.
