★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆ 3/5 AI Rating

Hatozaki Small Batch is a vatted malt matured across bourbon casks, sherry casks, and native Mizunara oak, drawing attention as a rare use of the prized Japanese oak at an accessible price point. Reviewers note a pleasant balance of sweet cereals, malty dried fruit, and a light smoke-and-honey finish that makes it an approachable entry into the Japanese whisky category. It lacks the depth and heritage of Suntory or Nikka but offers genuine value for those seeking Japanese oak character without a premium collector price.

Outstanding Whisky for Warm Weather!

"When I bought it for the first time last weekend, I knew it was a very fine whisky. I tried this one because I was looking for a cheap Japanese whisky. I took a chance without understanding what to anticipate. toasty wood finish, cereal hints of lemon rind. Exceptionally smooth and palatable. Add a couple cubes, and you're ready to go!"

Best Japanese whiskey for the season of spring and summer

"I'll be drinking this all summer long because of the low cost and high quality. I was actually lured to the lighter hue in anticipation of the warmer weather, and I was overjoyed to taste it and discover the Hatozaki finest's lovely complexity and airy elegance. I combined this with a squeeze of lemon, some club soda, and some decent sake I had on hand. Was quite calming. Since the weather is becoming warmer, I also enjoy drinking this outside on the balcony. Light citrus aromas, a little vanilla oak flavor, and even a faint cherry flavor—possibly from the wood's aging—are present. This one is fantastic, and the pricing is spot-on."

The satisfying value for money

""In a substantial tasting flight of beverages, this came in low-middle of the pack for the entire group.  Very noticeable cheerio-like cereal or grain notes, with a hint of lemon, grapefruit, and ginger below. Given that it was so mild, we preferred it neat or on the rocks to Mizuwari (with water).  Overall good pour, but nothing spectacular."

Nothin much to report here. . . . .

"I did my best to look for the good in this situation. The whiskey is so plain and watered down, though, that I can only presume the empty bottle was the sole thing that was matured for up to 12 years. It has an eggy sulfur oak perfume on the nose, which is followed by a very faint honeydew melon scent and other light fruits. It initially tastes bland and like a glass of distilled water on the palate. after which transitions to a fruity, spicy, oak aftertaste. If there wasn't any Toki left on the shelf, this would make an excellent light whiskey for the summer. Other than that, I would disregard this."

Disregard armchair Sallys and sip or combine.

"A wonderful combination. I hadn't tried this one before despite being a fan of Japanese whiskey. Due to the fact that it was a blend and the chaos that ensued in the Japanese market when Japanese whisky was "discovered" by the rest of the world, I was a little on edge. Anyhow, after reading the unfavorable evaluations, it's unclear to me what the tasters wanted. The whisky has a distinct character. Why should it be Hibiki or Nikka if it isn't? Is this whisky intended to be the pinnacle of a specimen from Japan? Why would anyone compare Japanese whisky to Irish whisky or American whisky? Most likely not. Is it shockingly nice and sold? Yes. It can also be blended and sipped."
